The Guild's Center for Workplace Technology provides specialized services to blind and visually impaired persons who seek training on computers and related equipment. Training is offered to persons entering the job market and to those who are presently employed, but who are losing their vision.
The Center, staffed by assistive technology specialists, is equipped with state-of-the-art computers, software, scanners, monitors, and printers capable of producing large print, Braille and/or speech output. Clients' computer skills are evaluated, as is their ability to use assistive devices. Training is then provided on the recommended computer and adaptive equipment configuration, often specifically customized to the client's needs.
Once trained, individuals will be able to conduct on-line research, use word processing, spreadsheet and other software programs. Additionally, clients of the Center will learn to send and retrieve e-mail, fax, and produce documents for work, school or personal use. Instructions for accessing the World Wide Web are also available.
Our technology specialists and placement counselors are available to consult with employers concerning appropriate workplace accommodations.
